White Bread

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 cup oil or melted shortening
  • 2 cups lukewarm water
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 8 cups flour
Directions
  • 1. In mixer bowl, sprinkle yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar over 1/2 cup warm water. Let stand until dissolved, about 5 minutes.
  • 2. Stir in egg, oil, water, salt and sugar.
  • 3. Stir in flour, 1 cup at a time. Knead about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in greased bowl and cover with clean kitchen cloth. Let rise to double, approximately 1 hour.
  • 4. Grease 3 (8 1/2" x 4 1/2") loaf pans.
  • 5. Press down dough, just until deflated, and divide into three parts. Form into loaves.* Place in prepared pans, cover and let rise until double.
  • 6. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Place loaves in oven several inches apart on center rack. Bake bread approximately 30 minutes, until golden brown and loaves sound hollow when tapped.
  • 7. Remove from oven. Loosen edges and turn onto wire rack to cool. While hot, brush tops with butter if softer crust is desired.
