Wheat Bread

Ingredients
  • 1 tablespoon yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1/4 cup sugar or honey
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup cooking oil
  • 1 1/2 cups warm water
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 3 cups white flour
Directions
  • 1. In mixer bowl, sprinkle yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar over ¼ cup warm water. Let stand until dissolved, about 5 minutes.
  • 2. Stir in egg, sugar, brown sugar, oil and 1 1/2 cups warm water.
  • 3. Add whole wheat flour and salt. Mix well and add white flour, 1 cup at a time.
  • 4. Knead about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  • 5. Place in greased bowl and cover with clean kitchen cloth. Let rise until double, about 1 hour. Grease 2 (8 1/2"x 4 1/2") loaf pans.
  • 6. Gently punch down dough, divide in half. Shape into 2 loaves.*
  • 7. Place in prepared pans. Cover and let rise until double, about 1 hour. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  • 8. Bake 30 minutes or until golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
Servings
  • Makes 2 (8 1/2"x 4 1/2") loaves
Tips

* To shape loaves: On lightly floured surface, pat dough into 6"x 8" rectangle. On long side of dough, roll up (jelly roll style) and place in pans, seam side down.
